# Local Development

Fork and clone NetMap before using these commands. See [Contributing Workflow](/development/contributing-workflow.md) for the required remotes, branches, commit steps, and pull-request target.

Work in:

```bash
cd <repo-root>
```

Build and run the all-in-one image from source:

```bash
cp .env.example .env
docker compose -f docker-compose.build.yml up --build -d
curl --fail http://127.0.0.1:8080/api/health
```

Backend tests:

```bash
cd <repo-root>/backend
env UV_CACHE_DIR=/tmp/uv-cache uv run --extra dev pytest tests
```

Frontend type-check and build:

```bash
cd <repo-root>/frontend
npm exec tsc -- --noEmit
node node_modules/vite/bin/vite.js build
```

After validation, commit the change to your feature branch, merge it into your fork's `test` branch, and push `origin test` as described in the contributor workflow.

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation dynamically by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the current page URL with the `ask` query parameter, and the optional `goal` query parameter:

```
GET https://docs.netmap.dev/development/local-development.md?ask=<question>&goal=<endgoal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is optional and describes the broader end goal you are ultimately trying to accomplish on behalf of the user. GitBook uses it to tailor the answer towards what is most useful for that goal.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
